Image As Observation
Image 1: make your mark exercise
Techniques: graphite pacer, colour pencil, brush marker, ink with paint brush, whiteboard marker.
Process: I used each of the mediums several times to get a better understanding of the way to flow and work with the paper.
Reflection: I liked using the pacer because of the precision and the brush marker because of its good flow, however it would have been much better on actual marker paper.
Image 2: observation exercise 1, my stuff
Technique: fine liner
Process: after positioning my chosen objects, I drew the line art for each, focusing on their contours.
Reflection: I enjoyed this one, however I had a hard time making each object look good (for my standards) without creating a sketch first. I do like the style of the shaky lines however.
Image 3: observation exercise 2
Technique: ink using paint brush
Process: this time I tried to paint the main shapes of the objects, and attempted to portray their likenesses accurately.
Reflection: I didn't really like doing this exercise solely because I don't enjoy painting as a medium, and I found it difficult to control the brush and separate the sections of color within the time given.
Image 4: observation exercise 3
Technique: fine liner on ink
Process: at this point some of the objects I was using as reference had been moved so I was partially working from memory and the previous works. I painted the main shapes first and then drew the details and contour lines on top.
Reflection: I had a better time with this one once I drew the line art, however because of time constraints I did this too soon and caused the pen ink to bleed into the painted ink. I am still not satisfied with the results of this exercise, mainly because I dislike and am not very adept at painting.
Image 5: observation exercise 4, girl reading (negative space)
Technique: ink and graphite pacer
Process: I chose an image from Pinterest that I thought would work for this activity and painted the negative space first, then drew the subject inside the empty space. I then filled in the gaps with more ink, added shading and defined the most important lines of the subject.
Reflection: this was a fun exercise because I have never really thought about the negative space of an image first. I struggled with the ink once again, and failed to create a smooth background, but I don't think it impacts the aim of the exercise. My main problem with drawing the subject inside the empty space was the small proportion of the shirt (striped part). I also think the image I chose was not the most appropriate for this exercise).
